SCA Hygiene is recalling a line of nappy pants after an "unusual odour" was discovered in one batch of the products when individual packs or cartons were opened.
The Treasures Nappy Pants - Toddler and Walker range with date codes of September 19, September 2 or October 8 last year have been voluntarily recalled.
Tests have indicated a "very low risk of any potential adverse health effects" and the company is completing comprehensive investigations.
It said it believed the incident is isolated to "a handful of packs" but the company is recalling the entire batch as a precautionary measure.
Company president Peter Diplaris said it was not a manufacturing issue.
"The odour originated from a shipping container used to transport the product to New Zealand from Poland. While our Treasures nappies are proudly manufactured in New Zealand, all nappy pants - both ours and competitors - are manufactured overseas. This is because the technology required to produce nappy pants is specialised and not available in New Zealand."
Consumers with an affected pack should dispose of it immediately and contact SCA Hygiene Australasia by emailing consumer.wr@sca-ha.com or phone 0800 124 727.
The recall affects no other Treasures products.
