Quick action from South Auckland pool staff may have saved a young girl's life after it was discovered she was struggling in the water.
Emergency services were called to Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Leisure Centre on Mascot Ave in Māngere shortly after 2pm.
Pool staff alerted the authorities after they noticed the girl "needed urgent assistance", Auckland Council head of active recreation Dave Stewart said.
"Staff acted quickly pulling her out of the water and performing resuscitation," he said.
"The girl was taken to hospital by ambulance, accompanied by a member of our staff, and is expected to make a full recovery."
A spokeswoman for St John said the girl was transported in a serious condition to Middlemore Hospital.

The service was called at 2.12pm and they requested the assistance of Fire and Emergency New Zealand too, the spokeswoman said.
The pool the girl was swimming in was temporarily closed following the distressing incident, Stewart said.
"These types of incidents are always distressing for staff and the public ... our staff are being provided with support and we wish the girl a full and speedy recovery."
