Joanna Davies talks to a couple of thespians about the struggle to find men willing to step out from behind the curtain and into the Waitakere theatre spotlight.
Audition notice: Theatre company desperately seeks male actors for upcoming play.
Waiatarua Performing Arts Trust is hunting for men to take to the stage.
For the small
theatre company on the edge of the Waitakere Ranges, finding helpers has never been a problem - but finding men to fill acting roles has.
"In all community theatres, it has always been a struggle to find men," says Megan Toole, who is directing A Night on the Tiles, by Frank Vickery, for the company's next show in May.
"I don't really know why that is, but we always get a lot of men wanting to help behind the scenes, rather than acting themselves."
Theatre committee member Siobhan Williams says the company held an audition day in February, but cast only one of the four men's roles.
"We are desperate to find someone for these parts," she says. "They don't need to have experience, all they need to do is learn their lines and follow direction."
The company needs a man to play a fatherly figure in his 50s and two more in their early- to mid-20s to portray brothers. "But they don't need to be the exact age. We are happy to audition people older or younger."
Mrs Toole says it is much easier to find women to take part. "We had five women come along on our audition day, but we have to wait to cast the men's roles before we cast some of the women's, so we can see how everyone works together."
Waiatarua Performing Arts Trust is small compared to other small community troupes around Auckland. "We have about 30 members, but everyone gets involved," says Mrs Toole. The company is building on a successful past, even though the theatre group disbanded for about 10 years. "I think it just died one of those natural deaths," says Mrs Williams.
"But this place has a lot of community spirit, and everybody around here really pulls together to make our plays a success."
A good keen man?
The company seeks three actors:
Reg: Father, in his late 40s to early 50s. Happy to plod along with life and let his wife, Doris, run everything.
Kenneth: Older brother, age 25. Has a good sense of humour and is a bit of a joker. Has a happy-go-lucky attitude but is able to show his serious and angry side too. This is a large role.
Gareth: Younger brother, husband of Shirley, in his early 20s. More serious. Lacks a bit of confidence. Feels inferior to his brother.
A Night on the Tiles by Frank Vickery will run from May 19 to 29. More info: email Megan Toole at dramaqueenb01@hotmail.com or see www.wpat.org.nz
