The Chiefs will sweat on the availability of fiery lock Kristian Ormsby for the start of their Super 12 campaign after he was sent off in last night's trial game against the Hurricanes.
The Chiefs overcame a halftime deficit to finish the stronger, taking the game 22-10 at the Tauranga Domain.
Star Hurricanes backs Jonah Lomu, who was on leave until six days ago, and Tana Umaga, who is battling back from an Achilles' tendon injury, both played half games.
But that did not stop the home side winning by four tries to one.
Ormsby was dismissed by referee Bryce Lawrence, who also yellow-carded Wellington lock Dion Waller and his Chiefs counterpart Chresten Davis after a fight late in the game.
The Chiefs expect Ormsby's hearing will be on Monday.
The worry for the Chiefs is that it is his second sending off within a year.
He was given a one-month suspension for kicking an opponent during the New Zealand Maori win over Argentina at Rotorua in June.
The Chiefs' final trial is against the Highlanders in Oamaru on Wednesday. The Hurricanes take on the champion Brumbies at Palmerston North on Friday.
Chiefs 22 (K. Lowen, B. Reihana, K. Mealamu, J. Gibbes tries, G. Jackson con), Hurricanes 10 (A. Hore try, D. Holwell con, pen). Halftime: 5-10.
