A cyclist has been critically injured in a crash in Dunedin, police say.

The cyclist, a 35-year-old man, collided with a car at about 8.30pm yesterday on Main Rd in the suburb of Fairfield.

The road was closed for several hours and police have spoken to the car's driver.
