A man suffered serious chest injuries in a four-vehicle crash in Waikato late this afternoon.

The crash happened on State Highway 1 at Lichfield, south of Putaruru, about 4.30pm.

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter service said one of the drivers, a man in his 30s, was flown to Waikato Hospital with abdominal and chest injuries.

He was in a serious condition, a St John ambulance spokeswoman said.

Several people, including two children, were taken by ambulance to Tokoroa Hospital, the rescue helicopter service said.

The St John spokeswoman said one person taken to Tokoroa had suffered moderate injuries. Their age and gender could not be confirmed.

Police northern communications confirmed one person was taken to hospital for treatment. Two others - including a child - suffered minor injuries.

Police said the collision caused delays. Diversions were put in place and the scene was expected to be cleared this evening.
