A man is dead after a house fire in Marton overnight.

Police say emergency services were called to a house fire in Vera Street.

The large house was well ablaze when firefighters from Marton and neighbouring Bulls arrived at the scene.

Fire officers wearing breathing apparatus discovered the body of a man - the home's sole occupant - in one of the rooms once they entered the house shortly after the blaze was brought under control.

Detectives from Whanganui were now at the scene with fire investigators.

Police say it is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.

Police are now trying to contact the next of kin.
