Woman killed, man seriously injured in horror shark attack at Crowdy Bay National Park

A woman has died and a man is seriously injured after being mauled by a shark on the New South Wales Mid-North Coast.

Emergency services were called to Crowdy Bay about 6.30am on Thursday (local time) after reports of a shark attack.

Witnesses tried to save the pair while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but the woman died at the scene.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, is yet to be formally identified.

A man, also believed to be aged in his 20s, was seriously injured and was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The beach has been closed while officers liaise with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to determine which species of shark was involved.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce said the attack was at quite a remote location and the details were still sparse.

“These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately, we’ve had a few this year already,” he said.

“We’re thinking of all of those people dealing with this.”
