The beach has been closed while officers liaise with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to determine which species of shark was involved.
Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce said the attack was at quite a remote location and the details were still sparse.
“These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately, we’ve had a few this year already,” he said.
“We’re thinking of all of those people dealing with this.”
