After consulting a feng shui master, the woman began to move the reflective surface so it was not facing her door, making visibility difficult for cars passing through the complex.
Several accidents quickly ensued and caused a wider dispute with the building’s other residents over the mirror’s positioning.
Her husband, whose surname is Luo, told Shanghai TV his neighbours had rarely used the mirror before it was moved.
Property management installed a second mirror on the corner to ease tensions, but after the woman moved both again, were forced to cement them in place.
The couple maintain that the convex mirror was “demon-revealing”, an artefact in Chinese mythological called Zhao Yao Jing that reveals demonic disguises.
“We are no demons,” Luo said. “We don’t want a demon-revealing mirror pointing at us.”
Police have warned the couple they could be criminally prosecuted if further traffic accidents occurred.
