A report will be prepared for the coroner. Whyalla Council has since confirmed it has euthanised the dog after the incident.
Last month, a 54-year-old man was left fighting for his life in hospital after he was mauled by his own dogs at his western Sydney home.
Officers with the Blacktown Police Area Command arrived at an address on Kildare Rd, Doonside, and were told the man had been attacked by several dogs.
A CareFlight helicopter was sent to the scene, with a specialist doctor and paramedics providing critical care to the man.
He sustained injuries to his head, chest and arm, CareFlight said in a statement.
