Pregnant Australian music teacher charged over ‘persistent’ sex abuse of student

A pregnant Western Australian high school teacher is facing child sex abuse charges after her “persistent sexual conduct” with a schoolboy under 16.

Naomi Tekea Craig, 33, was charged with two counts of sexual penetration of a child by as a person of authority, one count of persistent sexual conduct with a child under 16, and one count relating to child exploitation material, 7News reported.

The offending is alleged to have occurred between 2024 and 2025 while Craig was employed as a music teacher at Frederick Irwin Anglican School in Mandurah, 70km south of Perth.

Principal Tracey Gray confirmed Craig’s arrest in a letter to the school community on Tuesday, according to The Sun.

“I regret to inform you that a teacher from our school has been arrested by police and charged with child-related offences not involving any current student,” the letter read.

“The teacher has been instructed not to attend the school.

“The information available to the school suggests there is no need for concern for any other children at the school.

“The safety and wellbeing of your child and all students continues to be our priority.”

News.com.au reported Craig is pregnant with her second child, due later this month, and recently went on maternity leave.

The outlet also reported she married her long-term partner in 2019 and the couple share a 3-year-old son.

A Western Australia police spokesperson acknowledged the incident was “deeply distressing for the community”.

“Specialist detectives and support services are working tirelessly to investigate these matters and provide care for victims,” they said.

According to The Sun, Craig received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia and a Diploma of Education from Edith Cowan University and began her employment at the private co-educational school in 2024.

She is due to appear at the Mandurah Magistrates Court on January 27.
