British Prime Minister David Cameron's stock image-esque photo of himself on the phone to US President Barack Obama has been lampooned by Twitter heroes Sir Patrick Stewart and Rob Delaney, who "dialled in" with a tube of toothpaste and a packet of wet wipes.

The pair mimicked the Cameron's stern expression in the photos, sending up his rare "action shot" that elicited thousands of retweets from amused users.

"I've been speaking to @BarackObama about the situation in Ukraine. We are united in condemnation of Russia's actions," Cameron wrote, before comedian Delaney chimed in: "@David_Cameron @BarackObama Hi guys, I'm on the line now too. Get me up to speed."

Sir Patrick capped things off, adding that he was "now patched in as well. Sorry for the delay."

The X-Men actor's perfect run on Twitter continues, having previously delighted us with a Super Bowl gag featuring friend and colleague Sir Ian McKellen and a picture of himself dressed as a lobster reclining in a bath tub.

Cameron and Obama have shown a united front over the Ukraine crisis, saying that Russia must face "significant costs" if it does not change its course.

The Cameron selfie has spawned (increasingly surreal) parodies:
