A women's development agency supported by New Zealand in strife-torn Bougainville has received one of six inaugural United Nations millennium peace prizes to mark International Women's Day today.
Acting Women's Affairs Minister Sandra Lee said she welcomed the launch of the peace prize, the first award of its kind to honour women for peace-building.
One of the prizes went to the Leitana Nehan Women's Development Agency for its community work in Bougainville, where New Zealand peacekeepers served, Ms Lee said.
New Zealand had contributed $100,000 directly in development assistance to Leitana Nehan and indirectly through aid organisation Oxfam over the past three years.
