A man in Australia has been charged with animal cruelty after a dog was shot with a spear gun in a home in New South Wales.

The 45-year-old man allegedly broke into a neighbour's home in Woy Woy and shot the dog through the head.

The labradoodle named Milly has had surgery but is still in serious condition.

The dog's owner Kim Lott told 7 News she cannot understand how anyone could want to harm her pet.

"My dog was in my house and he's gone in there and got the dog out and done what he did," the distraught dog owner told 7 News.

The suspect has been arrested and will appear in court today.
