Residents in the NSW Riverina region were yesterday able to return to their properties after heavy rain prompted the Defence Force to evacuate them.

Defence Force personnel knocked on about 120 doors in the village of Ladysmith on Sunday to advise residents to leave after heavy rainfall caused waters to rise.

The nearby Kyeamba Creek peaked overnight Sunday and some water entered Ladysmith, but no significant flooding occurred.

About 120mm of rain fell at Wagga Wagga and two people in vehicles that drove into floodwaters needed to be rescued.
