I will be Prime Minister again says Chaudhry

Former Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry says he expects to be returned to the post after this month's election.

Chaudhry, Fiji's first ethnic Indian Prime Minister, is visiting Sydney for a fundraiser for the Fiji Labour Party.

He was overthrown in May last year in a coup led by George Speight, who is in prison awaiting trial on treason charges.

"I think we will win this election, yes," Chaudhry said.

"All the indications are that we will be the single dominant force in Parliament."

He rejected suggestions that he was a divisive figure in Fiji.

"The politicians opposed to us want to paint that picture of the Fiji Labour Party and myself, but if you ask the grassroots people they will tell you something else"

Fiji will go to the polls on August 25.
