Former chess champion detained in Japan

Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer is in custody in Japan after being detained over a possible immigration law violation and could be deported, a Japanese official said yesterday. Fischer, 61, was the only US citizen to become world chess champion. In 1992 he played in Yugoslavia, upsetting the US as economic sanctions were in force at the time.
