The 36-year-old was taken to a local hospital following the incident, where he was treated for his injuries.
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the car’s owner left his keys in the cupholder of the convertible while walking his dog in Bicentennial Park.
Johnson took advantage of the circumstances and took the car for a spin, leaving it crumpled as officers extinguished the flames.
A witness told Fox 35 the bewildered man had asked other bystanders for a lighter as he got into the expensive car.
“I thought, how does he have a BMW if he doesn’t have a lighter for a cigarette?”
Johnson has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended licence.
