Fire damages fortress in St Petersburg

A fire has heavily damaged a section of the Peter and Paul Fortress, one of St Petersburg's most important landmarks and tourist attraction.

The blaze damaged about 50 sq m of the fortress' Naryshkin bastion and destroyed the structure's wooden dome. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The fortress, one of the first structures built when the city was founded by Czar Peter the Great in 1703, was built to repel Swedish invaders.
