A Fijian soldier serving with the 4th New Zealand Battalion Group in East Timor has been killed.
Staff Sergeant Maika Rakabu was killed on Monday and 11 other Fijian soldiers were injured when a truck carrying them left the road 3km east of the town of Taroman at about 10.45am,
an army statement said.
Defence Minister Mark Burton extended his condolences and those of the New Zealand government to the soldier's family.
The Fijian company is a part of the New Zealand battalion which has responsibility for the south-west sector in East Timor.
Two New Zealand soldiers have also lost their lives in road crashes in East Timor.
Warrant Officer Class Two Tony Michael Walser, 37, was killed in November 1999 when a road collapsed under the truck he was driving, and Staff Sergeant William Edward White was killed in April 2000, also in a vehicle accident.
