Booze and trains do not mix, Queensland Rail warns New Year's Eve revellers

Queensland Rail is warning drunk people ahead of New Year's Eve that they need to be thinking about what they're doing.

Three days before one of the biggest nights of the year — especially in terms of alcohol consumption — the state rail company has released a 13-minute video of terrifyingly close calls drunk people have had with Queensland trains.

Queensland Rail chief Nick Easy said the video is meant to be far from funny, and anyone partying in the festive season should be aware of themselves and their mates.

"While these incidents can seem humorous, this vision is a stark reminder of how easily alcohol can affect you, causing you to act in ways you usually wouldn't or lose your footing," he said.

"In an active train station environment you're multiplying your risk of serious injury.

"With trains weighing up to 120 tonnes regularly passing through platforms without the ability to instantly brake or swerve to avoid you, train stations are no place to take risks with your safety."

The footage, all of which was obtained from station CCTV, shows drunk passengers stumbling up stairs and bashing into ticket barricades.

One of the scariest videos shows a man falling on to the tracks and bystanders helping him back up onto the platform.

When they realise the train is about to reach the platform, the men frantically start waving their arms while another man jumps on to the tracks to try and pull him up.

Right at the last second, the train's emergency brakes kick in, stopping it metres before a potential fatality.
And one man on CCTV awkwardly trying to jump the fare gate at Brisbane's Fortitude Valley station multiple times wasn't just caught on camera — he was also caught by police.

"The not-quite escape artist's plan is thwarted by police, who meet him on the platform and issue him with a $247 fine," Easy said.

In 2017 alone, more than 600 people tripped, slipped or fell on the rail network.

And, considering most of the people falling appear to be under the influence of alcohol, Queensland Rail said it's never been more important for friends to look out for each other this festive season.
