Base jumper survives 80 metres fall from building after parachute fails

This is the terrifying moment a base jumper throws himself off a 24-storey building in Sweden, only for his parachute to fail to deploy.

The accident was filmed and a video uploaded online shows the man flailing as he realises that his parachute has failed.

The man miraculously survived the incident, despite slamming into the asphalt below the 246ft-tall building in the capital Stockholm, according to the Daily Mail.

The incident took place on Kungsholmen, one of the islands that make up the Swedish capital, at around midday on Saturday.

Police and witnesses say the man jumped and landed on the street in front of his friends who were filming as well as shocked diners at the restaurant on the ground floor of the building.

The unnamed man was taken to hospital, where he was treated for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, Dagens Nyheter reports.

A friend of the unfortunate man carried out a base jump shortly after, which was successful and saw him land safely nearby.

BASE stands for buildings, antennas, spans (such as bridges), and Earth (such as cliffs and mountaintops) that jumpers can parachute from.

Stockholm Police told Dagens Nyheter that base jumping from buildings is not illegal in itself, however it depends if the roof or floor from where the jump is carried out has been lawfully accessed.

Several base jumps have been carried out from the Kungsholmen building in the past, including multiple incidents in 2013 which saw the tower block's roof terrace close.
