Authorities seek Brown University gunman as they release person of interest

The search for the gunman in the Brown University shooting has entered its third day, as students grieved two classmates killed and nine others who were injured. A person of interest was released early on Monday morning, authorities said.

Rhode Island Attorney-General Peter F. Neronha said that while “some degree of evidence” had pointed to that person, it now “points in a different direction”. Brown said it doubled its security staffing but that there is no immediate threat to the campus.

What to know about the shooting

• The investigation: The search for a gunman who killed two students and injured nine others inside Brown University’s engineering and physics building continues. Authorities released a person of interest on Monday, saying evidence pointed in a different direction and said they had no way of knowing if the assailant had left the state.
• The victims: All are students, Brown University president Christina Paxson said. Authorities said they will not share identifying information until all the families are notified. Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman, was killed in the shooting, his family said.
• The injuries: Of the nine patients treated for gunshot injuries at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, six are in critical but stable condition, one is in critical condition, one is stable and one has been discharged, the hospital said Sunday evening.
• The campus: Brown University cancelled all classes for the rest of the semester, and students were given permission to go home early. Mayor Brett Smiley (D) said late on Sunday that authorities were ramping up law enforcement presence on campus and in Providence.

Authorities say video of suspect released earlier still relevant

Authorities in Providence are seeking additional video evidence from the area and asked community members with security cameras installed to come forward. Mayor Brett Smiley said Providence police will canvass the neighbourhood, specifically looking for any videos.

“The videos at Brown in the building have been examined, and at this time, we have no additional actionable information from the video that has been reviewed from the building.”

Officials said that the video they released earlier of a male dressed in black turning a street corner, in which the person’s face is not visible, is still the most useful one they have at the moment.

Neronha said there were not a lot of cameras in the campus building.

“We’re not holding back video that we think would be useful,”
