Tourists and residents could soon be enjoying a spruced up Lake Domain if a landscape redevelopment plan is approved by the South Wairarapa District Council.
A proposal for the western end of the recreational area on Lake Wairarapa includes a new camping area with fire pits, picnic tables and a roofed shelter, and improved boat ramps.
There would also be improved signage at the entrance way and native tree groves.
District council resource management planner Lisa Tipoki said Lake Domain was a wonderful asset for the region. "It's under-utilised. It's a beautiful area on a nice day and it would make it more appealing."
The redevelopment is aimed at encouraging people to use the area more often, and would include walking and mountain biking trails around the lake edge with links to Featherston via Turner's Lagoon.
Open for consultation until tomorrow, the redevelopment plan has received seven submissions, all with a "positive tone", Ms Tipoki said.
"They've all got suggestions about different things we could do and we'll definitely be taking that into account. But there will definitely be some redevelopment."
The focus of the makeover is on the western end of Lake Domain. Campers will still be able to use the existing camping area in the eastern part of the domain, but the vehicle bridge will not be reinstated, so access will be walking-only.
The revamp ties in with Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Park project, which borders Lake Domain.
A report is expected to be discussed at the council meeting in April.
The redevelopment plan has been developed in collaboration with Greater Wellington, Department of Conservation, local iwi and clubs.
Ms Tipoki could not give an estimated cost but said it would be absorbed in the council's parks and reserves budget.
