Review: Graham Reid
In which gore-grunge rockers Creed play "executive soundtrack producers" and invite in equally malevolent, noisy, dark-hearted cohorts with nasty names (Slipknot, Dope, Full Devil Jacket, Incubus).
Surprisingly - given this is, if not death metal, then certainly fright-show rock - it hangs together well because, while a whole album of Godsmack (for example) might be too much to take, here they are simply part of the diversity and texture.
Static-X work the techno-threat end on So Real, Incubus offer a spacious, yet oddly claustrophobic and appropriately titled Crowded Elevator, Fuel impress in a Seattle kinda way on Sunburn and Orgy seem to know the virtue of good, distorted techno-synth beat.
But amidst the broodinesss, emotional dysfunctionalism and feeling the fear there are those oddly moral moments. Here's the very fine Coal Chamber: "Don't compromise your ideals for anyone else, respect your Mom, always think of her first ..."
And always wash your hands after going to the toilet?
Eighteen tracks and as an album, better than you might expect. And a whole lot better than the milking-it movie.
