Staying at the Vinh Hung Riverside Resort & Spa in Hoi An, Vietnam

Viet Hung Riverside Resort and Spa.

Location: At the south end of Hoi An township, on the river.

Check-in experience: Friendly and welcoming, with good vibes. We were offered fresh juices on arrival. Room: A Double Deluxe with a king bed and a lovely view of the Thu Bon River. The resort has a relaxing bach feel — we even had a small crab in our room on arrival — one of the perks of having a riverside room! The room had an interesting space-conserving set-up, with the desk up against the bed head, and a thin couch against the bed also. There was also a telly, safe, mini fridge, kettle, Wi-Fi and good air-conditioning.

Bathroom: Clean and a good size, with a shower/bath combo.

Facilities: The highlight is the fantastic outdoor pool with a swim-up bar, but the gym could use some air-conditioning. There is also a restaurant that has both indoor and sheltered balcony seating.

Price: Rooms start at about $110.

Noise: On a weekend night expect some happy tourists on the cocktails by the bar or pool, where the noise travels easily to the rooms. Otherwise peaceful.

Food and drink: A breakfast buffet was included in our booking, which featured the usual: bacon, eggs, pancakes, pastries, cereal and fruit, as well as a selection of Asian food. We were staying during Halloween and some of the brunch food was decorated in theme.

What's in the neighbourhood? The resort is just a five-minute walk from Hoi An's Old Quarter and the popular night markets are two minutes down the road.

What's so good about this place? The friendliness of the staff — I was sick during my stay and I felt like I had my mother taking care of me. It's also a great place to relax after a day of exploring.

Perfect for? Those after a relaxing environment.

Would I return? In a heartbeat.
