1. Muriwai
A rugged, raw, open links where the conditions are as challenging as the course, especially when playing into a howler on the par-three eighth. Probably as close as you can get to St Andrews in Auckland, using some considerable imagination - and the waves are bigger. Plus youcan head over the dunes for a swim. It's also a good winter golf course as the couch grass and sandy base give good drainage.
2. Pukekohe
Right on State Highway 22, but by the time you get through the par-three fourth hole, David, and par-five fifth Goliath the sound of the traffic is absorbed by the pristine Franklin countryside - especially on a Monday for just $25.
Less than an hour most days from central Auckland, (next to SH2) and perfect for a leisurely Sunday round. Lungfuls of fresh air are complemented by relatively open fairways. Follow it with a beer and a feed in the hospitable clubrooms.
4. Clark's Beach
On the shores of the Manukau, where pohutakawa-lined fairways enhance a walk. Enjoy the signature par-threes at nine, where the harbour breeze needs to be respected, and at 12, where the cluster of bunkers surrounding the green can provide much amusement, as long as you're not in them.
Ambivalent about the town but it's a very likeable golf course. Think links style and far more laid back than the surrounding posh houses where, if you're really lucky (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) you can hook a tee shot and see how a golf ball bounces off a mansion.
