Whether you're morely likely to wander around the Louvre, or to visit a quirky museum dedicated to a sole ginger cat named John Pierpont Morgan, visiting these institutions is great way to learn about the history and culture of a destination.

A trip to one of the locations listed below wouldn't be complete without a visit to the most popular museums, but why not also explore some of the lesser known, eccentric museums during your stay? With the help of Booking.com, we've put together the best places to get your museum fix in Europe.

St. Petersburg, Russia

The former imperial palace is home to the largest collection of paintings of any museum in the world. Since the Hermitage occupies a full six buildings on the banks of the Bolshay Neva River, you will need to stay here dusk until dawn in order to see it all.
