Long-time listener of The Country (formerly known as The Farming Show), Jim Findlay contacted Jamie Mackay today to celebrate the life of "Broadcaster and Gentleman" Hildred Carlisle.
Jim writes: "Hildred was a prominent rural broadcaster through the 1960's. He introduced a lot of comedy into reporting the rural reports and
produced some magic reports that were not appreciated by all. One such story he presented was at the time DDT was being banned and he set up a whole programme on farming grass grubs and selling them to the Asians as whitebait. The presentation was so real it ended up with the then Minister of Agriculture and Hildred was reprimanded for attempting to mislead the country."
Someone else who knew Hildred Carlisle is Don Carson. He called Jamie Mackay on today's show to share some more interesting stories and memories of the "Broadcaster and Gentleman."
