Rose Harding rounds up cattle prices.

Rose Harding rounds up cattle prices.

Plentiful feed and buyer confidence meant in-calf cows sold strongly at yesterday's annual cow fair at Stortford Lodge.

The wet weather did not deter either vendors or the full rostrum of buyers and the quality offering of 616 head sold to buyers from Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, Wairarapa, the Bay of Plenty and Christchurch.

A feature of the sale was the annual offering of 194 head of angus cows from Moeangiangi Station, Waihau.

Top price was $3.67/kg, $1730/head, for a line of 17 R3, 471kg, angus heifers sold by Tuapae Farm, Kereru. A similar line from the same vendor made $3.51/kg, $1750/head for 20, 499kg heifers. That compares with last year's top price of $3.34/kg, $1490/head, 445kg three-year-old hereford-friesian heifers sold by Manganoe Farm, Waihau.

The rain did result in a smaller lamb offering than expected at about 3000 but prices were up again on last week as the good news continues for sheep breeders. There was only one pen of lambs from Wairoa or Gisborne on offer this week. In the past few weeks they have comprised most of the weekly offering.
