"People need to get out and enjoy the environment around them, and walking is the most cost-effective exercise there is."
Stratford District Council parks and property asset manager Neil Cooper was recognised for his efforts in ensuring people have improved walking access across tracks and pathways in the Taranaki region, when he was presented with a Walking Access Champion 2015 trophy.
The presentation took place at a Stratford District Council (SDC) meeting, where the council itself was also recognised for contributions made to retain and enhance access to a number of tracks around the district.
Mayor Neil Volzke accepted a Walking Access award on behalf of the council from New Zealand Walking Access Commission's George Williamson, saying the council saw great economic potential in the development of recreational areas.
In presenting Mr Cooper with his individual award, Mr Williamson said it was thanks to the efforts of people like him that people were able to enjoy walkways that will now be available to future generations as well. He explained that many walkways originally existed through 'gentlemen's agreements' and were never formally registered. This meant as land changed hands some walkways could disappear. The work done by Neil Cooper and Stratford District Council had now ensured permanent legal access for the public to the Cardiff Centennial Walkway and the Carrington Walkway.
