Last week, Taranaki MPs Chester Borrows, Barbara Kuriger and Jonathan Young visited health services around Taranaki to gain a thorough understanding of the healthcare coverage that is available to Taranaki residents, from the first responders to the hospitals.
On the second day of their tour, they visited the Avon Medical
Centre in Stratford, meeting with the business manager of Primary Healthcare Limited Mark Taylor and Avon Medical Centre practice manager Karen Caskey as well as Stratford mayor, Neil Volzke.
"This model of care is incredibly successful, people working together is good for local health overall." Chester said he was impressed by the way in which Avon Medical Centre offered residents access to a range of services and encouraged open communication and dialogue between health care providers.
The recent closure of Stratford's maternity unit was certainly a big loss for the town, he added, saying there was "a bit of a battle" happening with the DHB regarding what services would be provided in Stratford.
