IN the early hours of Thursday, August 27 a tornado ripped through properties across the northwest of Stratford, causing panic for residents and significant damage to their homes.
The tornado arrived around 12.30am and struck homes on Fabian Street, breaking and scattering branches, tearing at roofing materials and dislodging spouting.
According to witnesses, the tornado touched down on the street and promptly launched one family's trampoline 150 metres over two houses.
During it's brief flight, the trampoline crashed through the property of Judy and Ron Hall on Fabian Street and smashed into their roof - taking with it their TV aerial. It then flew through the polycarbonate roof of their greenhouse, before smashing into their sleep-out and breaking a window and spouting. It continued on and finally came to a halt in their next-door neighbour's garden.
"It sounded like the tornado was coming down the driveway," Judy recalled.
"There was this huge crash and I was terrified. The family often stay in the sleep-out when they come to visit; it was just luck there was no one in there last night - there was glass everywhere."
Neighbour, Bernadette - in who's garden the trampoline finally came to rest – said, "I couldn't believe it when I woke up this morning to find a huge trampoline in the yard."
Bernadette then quickly quipped, "I'm going to wish for a swing-set next."
This is the second time a tornado has ripped through this part of Stratford - in July 2007, a tornado ripped through properties on Cressida Avenue, Fabian Street and Celia Street causing significant damage to the roofs of a number of homes, particularly on Fabian Street.
