A little bit of history was made Saturday June 8, when the Drum Corps of the Stratford Pipe Band performed a drum salute at the Stratford Savage Club.
This was the first time the Stratford Pipe Band had a full drum corps of side drummers perform since the 1970's or
maybe even the 1960's - "living memories cannot recall the last time this happened," says Pipe Major John Campbell.
The corps, under the guidance of Martin Engelbrecht with the help of Johan de Bruin and Rex Walker, played part of the drum salute written by Kristy Colville of Hawera. The younger members - Brendon Simmons, Kaelin Beck, and Kahlia Beck - have only been learning the drums since late February.
"They are developing really well", says Mr Engelbrecht. "They played really well considering they have only been learning the salute for the last three weeks. Every week they are getting better and better."
Anybody young or old, wishing to learn and play the side drum should contact Bryan Kyle on 764 8121.
