Samantha Burgham has never been one to let things get in her way, and her sheer grit and determination has been recognised by the Toko Lions who presented her with a laptop computer to help with her education.
Samantha is one of a triplet, but due to medical difficulties when she was very young, she now suffers from cerebal palsy, which affects her motor skills.
The Toko School student has to work twice as hard as any other child to do things as simple as forming letters and numbers because every bit of thought goes into controlling her movement.
Despite this, she enjoys school and is ecstatic about her new laptop.
"I like my new computer a lot and it will help me get my work done lots quicker," she said.
Samantha is also a true lover of sports.
Always participating, even though she moves with the aid of a walker, she is often the first one out on the netball courts and plays goalie at hockey. She is an avid All Blacks fan and is collecting the Weetbix player stats cards. She is looking forward to watching the 2007 Rugby World Cup and her favourite player, Richie McCaw.
Not only does Samantha enjoy playing sport, she also loves to sing and was on stage with her fellow students at the recent Kids for Kids Concert where she sang with noted performer, Suzanne Prentice.
She and sisters, Lydia and Courtenay, are looking forward to celebrating their 10th birthday this year.
Toko Lions heard about Samantha and her wonderful attitude and thought it most appropriate that she be a recipient in their latest round of grants.
"This is a girl who shows so much passion. She loves to be involved in everything. We see her as the perfect candidate to receive assistance from Lions because she is the epitome of a hard worker," said Toko Lions President, Rex Hodgetts.
Samantha was not the only Toko local to benefit from Lions generosity.
This year they are also funding Toko Primary School students to enter the Learn to Swim programme at the TSB Pool.
They donated items to the Toko Hall and the Toko Fire Brigade as well as the funding more specialised care at the Toko Playcentre.
Lions are sponsoring the cost of sending two young people to Camp Quality. The camp allows cancer sufferers the chance to forget about their illness and have fun. Lions are actively participating in a worldwide club campaign to raise the awareness of sight issues such as glaucoma.
