IN 1999, Vaughan Wood decided he wanted more from a rocking chair and set to work about creating one that provided a smoother ride, with less friction.
Although the first model looked a bit bulky he completed his mission.
Vaughan started his project in 1999 in his then home town of Pennsylvania, Bedford County, USA, in 2005 he packed up his models and came to New Zealand.
Once his first design was completed Vaughan set about improving and redesigning the model he wanted to make it smaller, more attractive and suitable for all ages.
Now after many years Vaughan is happy with his model and they are selling like hot cakes. While in the States he sold over 120 rocking chairs and in New Zealand he is already at number 80.
The recycled timber and coloured canvas can be chosen to suit the clients tastes and the 'wooden rockers' can also be coated with a special finish for constant outdoor use.
The rockers are adjustable and the frictionless motion provides great comfort and support especially for the elderly.
"I have been told my so many that the smooth rocking motion provides therapeutic relief," he said.
Valued from $650 the custom-made rockers are a great investment and provide much enjoyment, relaxation and comfort.
Vaughan is currently looking at a few new options a smaller narrower chair and one that is more upright for musicians.
