Murt Kennard, the much-loved president of the Whangamomona Republic, died on Sunday morning at the hospice in New Plymouth.
Before he died, Murt received a new title, that of CRR (Chief Republic Revolter) when he was knighted in a special ceremony in the Republic on Saturday, October 17.
Over 100 Forgotten Highwaymen rode out to the Republic for what Murt believed was just going to be a catch-up with friends. They were there however, to watch their friend be 'knighted' for his services to the Republic by local ambassador Mark Cop. In keeping with his reputation as one who avoids the traditional path, Murt chose the title of CRR rather than the usual 'Sir'.
Murt has been the Republic's president since 2005, when he fought off strong competition from former president Ian Kjestrup and a cross-dresser called Miriam to take office.
He was the Republic's fourth president, and second human one, fighting off challenges from a variety of contenders, from wizards to foreign invaders.
