Stratford District Council is working with neighbouring authorities, New Plymouth District Council and South Taranaki Council, on a new contract for rubbish and recycling collection.
The current contract, also a joint one between the three councils, expires in October 2015.
Director of assets for Stratford District Council, Sven Hanne, saysthat working with the neighbouring authorities means the councils can get the best possible price. In the new tender, Stratford is considering a range of options, including a potential change from the current monthly recycling collection to a fortnightly collection.
It is also looking at options for separating the glass collection from the recycling and having that collected fortnightly or monthly. The rubbish collection, which is currently from 120 litre wheelie bins weekly, will remain the same.
The tender also includes the operation of the Stratford Transfer Station but does not include the collection of green waste for the Stratford area as this service is already available from a private operator.
Sven explains that the separation of glass from the rest of the recycling is done because it will "increase efficiency of a new recycling sorting facility to be built in time for this contract in New Plymouth".
He adds that it also minimises health risks to staff at the facility as well as limiting contamination of other materials and decreasing wear and tear on equipment.
