Lily honoured by Sir Peter award

It's not about being the best, it's about working hard and to the best of your abilities.

That was Lily Upton-Hansen's message after receiving the Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award last Thursday.

The 11-year-old Midhirst Primary School pupil was awarded a certificate, a medal, some lucky red socks and Sir Peter Blake's story.

The Young Leader is awarded to one student (aged 9-13) in each primary and intermediate school where teachers and peers have nominated candidates.

``The trust believe this award is is a great way to empower students, who have leadership skills and helps develop their confidence, while providing a strong role model for their peers,'' says programme assistant Emma McFadyen.

Lily said: ``It's about constantly working hard and trying my best. You don't have to be the best, you just have to always try your hardest to be the best you can be.

``It's definitely an honour. I'm over the moon.''

This year 163 students were nominated for the Young Leader Award nationally. In Central Taranaki, Rosie Taylor from Egmont Village Primary School also received the award.
