Hidden treasure in day spa

"It's been a bit of a hidden treasure in many ways. People knew it was here, but until they actually visit and experience the place themselves, they don't fully know just how beautiful and peaceful it is."

Rod Pulford says he and his wife Lynne jumped at the chance to purchase Platinum Lodge, a boutique day spa, beauty retreat and wedding venue on Pembroke Road.

"It is such a unique place. The place has so many facets to it, offering everything from regular hair and beauty treatments to overnight stays for a full spa retreat. Every aspect of the business has a feel of luxury and relaxation to it. It is a pleasure to live and work here."

Lynne says she and Rod are looking at developing the wedding venue side of the business.

"It is the perfect place for a wedding; the bride can get ready here, she and her bridal party can have spa treatments and their hair done, and the setting is perfect for photographs."

With both Rod and Lynne having plenty of experience in service and hospitality, including four years managing Ngati Ruanui Mountain House, they are confident their new business venture ticks all the right boxes.

"We were both really impressed when we first looked around. The building itself is timeless, it has been architecturally designed in such a great way and you feel surrounded by luxury as soon as you enter."

As well as increasing the lodge's profile as a boutique wedding venue, Rod and Lynne are also extending the range of services offered. "We have an appearance medicine practitioner from Wellington once every four or five weeks, offering a range of services. We have Kelly King, an ex-Hawera girl with 18 years experience hairdressing joining us from Sydney bringing the latest styles with her."

Rod and Lynne say they are loving working with Tash Hintz, the previous owner. "She has done such a good job with the lodge, so having her stay on is perfect. Her vision for this place was excellent, and we are enjoying expanding on that now."

Living at the lodge means Rod and Lynne are hands-on. "We also fully appreciate all that makes this place so special, beautiful surroundings, peaceful gardens and of course, the magnificent mountain."
