The mesmerising colours of Alyx Devlin's drive to school were the inspiration to write Colours Of The Wind, for which she was named a finalist at the International Institute of Modern Letters National Poetry Competition.
Alyx says she has always been interested in writing, with poetry being her passion.
"I'vewritten short stories for assessments at school, but poetry is more me. I can express myself through poetry."
Alyx has been a part of St Mary's Diocesan School Young Writers Group since year nine and says being a part of this group gave her the confidence to enter her work in the competition.
"In the Young Writers Group I can gain feedback about my writing from my teacher, Mrs Taylor, as well as my peers which is so helpful."
This was the first year Alyx had entered into the International Institute of Modern Letters National Poetry Competition and says she encourages other young writers to get involved.
"I was flown to Wellington to meet the other finalists and attend a mentor programme which was a great experience."
Aylx says she took a lot away from the mentor programme where she heard from London-born writer Cliff Fell.
"Cliff gave us all great advice and really inspired me to keep going with my writing."
Alyx, who is currently head girl at St Mary's Diocesan, has plans to attend Victoria University next year to study psychology, English literature and creative writing.
