"I've never seen a kitten that doesn't look adorable, but that doesn't mean they all find homes. There are just too many kittens being born and ending up living wild." The problem is they then continue to breed and increase the problem, says Karma Andrews.
Karma is a trustee and volunteer at The Scratching Post, a local charity which finds homes for abandoned kittens. In an attempt to reduce the numbers of kittens looking for homes the group has introduced a scheme offering low income families the opportunity to have their pet cat desexed at a discounted price.
"Originally we were offering the service to people who owned a female cat, but now we have extended it so it is for male and female cats. Hopefully this will help decrease the number of homeless kittens even more."
Karma says to be eligible for the discount, you need to be a Stratford resident with either a community services or gold card.
"We are able to offer this discount thanks to a donation from the Taranaki Electricity Trust, plus the proceeds from our ongoing fundraising in the shop."
