Emergency service teams were called to Fulton Hogan in Stratford last Wednesday afternoon with the discovery of hazardous waste.
Stratford fire chief Tony Fowley says the brigade were called to the scene by Fulton Hogan. Tony says the company had been called to Hawera where two drums of unidentified material were lying on the road, "it wasn't clear whether they had been dumped or fallen off a truck". As the drums were brought back to Stratford, Tony says the workers noticed they were leaking and called the fire brigade for assistance.
"We always prepare for worst case scenario so we called in the Hazardous Materials team from New Plymouth to help with the situation."
Claudius Street was evacuated as emergency teams tried to identify the material.
Tony says the material has been handed over to the Taranaki Regional Council to identify and dispose of correctly.
