It was all action at the New Zealand ATV motocross championships in New Plymouth over the weekend, with Stratford brothers Scott and Camo Keegan earning the top prizes in the competition.
Two days of race action were held at the Barrett Road Motorcycle Park near New Plymouth, and with wetweather forecast for Sunday, the organisers decided to attempt to get through as many of the planned seven races for each of class while the sun was shining on Saturday says Camo.
"It was really hot and dry on Saturday which did cause a lot of dust on the track." Sunday was a different story. "The wet weather basically turned the track into a swamp".
Camo says he and his brother both had wins on Saturday in the premier senior A class , and with the wet conditions organisers decided on Sunday morning to run just one more race, winner takes all.
While Camo says he took an early lead in the race, the swamp-like conditions and not being able to get past a lapped rider meant that Scott won the race and the title of New Zealand ATV Motocross Champion.
"I was behind Camo for most of that final race and my helmet was getting very heavy from all the mud his bike was spraying at me." Scott says "It's great to race against my brother like this. On the track we are competitors but it's nice being able to celebrate as friends".
