Kevin Shoebridge's Tyco is in line for a top-three finish in the fifth leg of the round-the-world race, which is expected to end today.
The leading yachts should complete the 4450-nautical-mile journey from Rio de Janeiro to Miami in the next 24 hours or so.
Tyco, skippered by New
Zealander Shoebridge, is fifth overall after four legs of the nine-leg race.
If it finishes second or higher in this leg it will move into third place overall behind illbruck and Amer Sports One.
Last night, illbruck had 203 nautical miles to sail and just a three-nautical-mile advantage over Assa Abloy.
Tyco was a further 10 nautical miles back, followed by SEB, News Corp and Amer Sports One by more than 50 nautical miles.
Djuice and Amer Sports Too were at the rear of the fleet.
As the wind is forecast to become light after entering the Providence Channel, Assa Abloy and Tyco may have a chance to overtake illbruck.
Meanwhile, Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One is recovering after being struck by lightning.
No one was injured and the boat appears to have suffered no structural damage, although most of the electrical equipment on board was blown.
"I don't really know if we were struck or it was just real close. I think it was just real close," said navigator Roger Nilson after the team managed to jury rig a communication system.
"Everyone is fine, other than we lost too many miles having yet another cloud mess us around."
