The fleet were tightly packed last night in the sprint from Miami to Baltimore in the sixth leg of the round-the-world race.
The all-female crew on Amer Sports Too won the start after six of the eight yachts were forced to restart after jumping the gun.
Amer Sports Too
skipper Lisa McDonald and her husband, Neal McDonald, the skipper of Assa Abloy, were the only two who made clean starts.
Illbruck, anticipating a recall, was the first yacht to restart, followed by Grant Dalton's Amer Sports One.
Amer Sports Too had a 200m lead over Assa Abloy at the first mark and illbruck recovered well from their restart to turn in third position.
Last night, Assa Abloy had a one-mile lead over illbruck, with Amer Sports One a further mile back in third place.
The next three boats, News Corp, SEB and Amer Sports Too, all shared fourth place, three miles behind the leader.
Tyco and djuice were seventh and eighth, just four and six miles off the lead, but it is early days, even in a leg that is only 875 nautical miles long, the second-shortest of the nine legs.
The race office has been told that several skippers intend to lodge protests.
The fleet is expected to reach Baltimore on Thursday.
