Three New Zealand crews were placed in the top five of their classes after the second day of the Athens 2003 yachting regatta.
The women's 470 crew climbed to third place after winning a race, Jon Paul Tobin held on to second in the men's Mistral and Sarah Macky remained fourthin the Europe class.
Neither Tobin nor Macky sailed on the second day.
The New Zealand highlight was the victory by Shelly Hesson and Linda Dickson in race three of the 470 class.
After an excellent start, they worked the shifts on the first beat to lead round the first mark and continued to play the shifty conditions very well.
They led at every mark to win by 58s.
Conditions were similar to the opening day. A a puffy, fluctuating offshore breeze was influenced by an opposing sea breeze further offshore beyond the course areas.
The two breezes clashed on the 49er course, resulting in a drifting lottery which is subject to protest.
The New Zealand crew of Mike Bassett and Ed Smyth was leading until the wind disappeared and the fleet placings were turned upside down, the present world champions finishing last. The regatta is a test event for the 2004 Olympic Games.
