The New Zealand Yngling crew improved to eighth overall at the Athens 2003 yachting regatta in Greece yesterday.
The crew of Alesha Thorpe, Karen Lambert and Michelle Vinsen fought their way up the standings as a result of a third placing in yesterday's race.
They recovered from being second to last atthe first mark to work their way through the fleet in difficult conditions.
Fickle conditions dominated racing yesterday, with a fading offshore breeze in the morning replaced by a light onshore sea breeze which disappeared late in the afternoon.
New Zealand sailors competed in four classes on the fifth day of the regatta.
In the 470 men, Simon Cooke and Peter Nicholas recorded a solid sixth placing in their first race before a lack of breeze meant only four boats in the fleet finished within the time limit in the second race.
That race is now subject to a mass protest and may yet be thrown out by the international jury hearing the case. Cooke and Nicholas are 17th overall.
Shelly Hesson and Linda Dickson finished 22nd yesterday to be 16th overall in the 470 women, and Finn sailor Clifton Webb finished 12th to be 11th overall.
