Yachting: Sir Edmund to start Sydney-to-Hobart fleet

Mt Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary will lend his support to another great battle against the elements when he plays a part in the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race this summer.

Hillary, 83, has accepted an invitation to be the official starter for the 58th sailing of the 630-nautical-mile whitewater classic beginning on Boxing Day.

He will be the first New Zealander to be given the job of sending the fleet on its way.

Cruising Yacht Club of Australia commodore John Messenger said Hillary's involvement would increase the race's standing internationally.
