With two days of competition remaining in the ISAF world championships in Spain, New Zealand are in a good position to qualify a further three spots at next year's Olympics.
Under a complicated qualifying system, New Zealand are on the brink of securing places in the Laser, Finn and the women's470 classes.
Andrew Murdoch is lying fifth in the Laser class on 33 points. He finished yesterday's two races with a 23rd and a 12th.
If Murdoch finishes in the top five and no other New Zealander finishes in the top 10, then Murdoch earns himself the Olympic spot. Of the other New Zealanders in the fleet, Robbie McMillan is 25th, Rod Dawson is 35th, David Weaver is 40th, Michael Bullot is 50th and Team New Zealand tactician Hamish Pepper dropped out.
If New Zealand qualify in the class but none of the New Zealand sailors finish in the top five then a trial to determine who goes to Athens will take place in January.
In the Finn class, Clifton Webb is 26th and Peter Fox 31st and in the women's 470 class Shelley Hesson/Linda Dickson are 14th.
New Zealand have already secured Olympic spots in the men's Mistral class, the men's 470 and the Europe class. Mistral sailor Barbara Kendall qualified herself this week after finishing second in the class.
Today is the last day for the Finn class, and the second to last day for the remaining five classes.
